Le perline sono un elemento che la popolazione europea associa istintivamente al continente africano, ed effettivamente sul territorio è possibile trovare infiniti souvenir e oggetti di ogni tipo realizzati con i beads, grande business legato al turismo.

La produzione di questo materiale proviene dalla Cina e l’industria cinese si sta economicamente espandendo sul territorio, sottraendo alla popolazione locale manodopera e produzione. L’opera, che per dimensioni e colori ricorda un’indicazione stradale, riproduce in cinese la parola “welcome”, provocando un cortocircuito tra l’uso del linguaggio ed il materiale che lo compone.

Il progetto è stato realizzato a Cape Town in occasione della residenza ARP 7ED Exchange.

The beads are an element that the European population instinctively associates to the African continent, and in fact on the territory it is possible to find endless souvenirs and object of all kinds made with them, great business related to tourism.

The production of this material comes from China and, the Chinese industry is economically expanding on the territory, taking away from the local population labor and production. The work, which in size and colour resembles a street sign, reproduces in Chinese the word “welcome”, causing a short circuit between the use of language and the material that composes it.

The project was carried out in Cape Town on the occasion of the ARP 7ED Exchange residence.
